Hydrobond Engineering offer an enhancement to our products called ¡®Cathodic Delamination Protection¡¯ (CDP), the process has been developed specifically for use in assemblies used in systems (such as submarines) that are not permanently grounded.

Cathodic delamination is the de-bonding of elastomer mouldings from metal surfaces. When bonding an Elastomer to a metal surface a primer is required, this primer is eaten away by a solution produced by an electrochemical cell, similar to a battery, which is formed between the connector body and a cathodic protection system such as a zinc anode or an induced current.

When two metals are in contact with each other in sea water, one metal acts as a cathode and the other as an anode. The anode will lose mass or corrode as electrons or current run through the system, the lost mass can be found deposited on the cathode.

Zinc or Aluminium anodes are often attached to the system as ¡®sacrificial anodes¡¯ to protect the main body or system from corrosion. Hydrobond Engineering¡¯s Cathodic Delamination Protection eliminates the de-bonding of the elastomer by placing a barrier between the metal and the primer, increasing the life span of the system integrity.

Hydrobond Engineering have been producing connector systems with Cathodic Delamination Protection in excess of 10 years with Zero reported failures.
